Legality, Haircut, Bubbles and Reality

Yesterday morning started well. After our BIG breakfast, we went back to the Civil Affairs office to finalize the adoption from the China side. After nearly 2 years of paperwork, the actual document signing was pretty anticlimactic.
During one of the bus rides, yesterday, Enyi got very sad (probably exacerbated by being tired and returning to the place where we met and being surrounded by orphanage officials). At first, he would not allow me to hold him, but within a few he let me pick him up and he snuggled right in. This happened a couple more times during the day. What also helped, were the little packets of peanut M&Ms that he loves (also a sign that he IS our son). We also had to laugh at the fact that Campbell and Enyi can fight and make-up without speaking the same language. It was just odd (to us) how quickly that transpired. Jay and I are trying to strike a healthy balance of firm boundaries and a tender heart, as it would appear that Enyi was allowed to get away with just about anything if he just giggled when he was told no...I can see how that worked! But as my mom would say, we also want to "nip in in the bud" while not destroying any early bonding.
Today is the day that Enyi will get his passport photo taken today and he will go for his medical exam and immunizations. (this is the part we have been dreading!) However, our guide told us that over the age of 5, he may only need a max of 4 shots...whew!...and his TB test. We'll let you know how that goes.
Anyway, after a "big boy" haircut, we went to the local park to play, blow bubble, etc. We now know that this kid LOVES trains (again, JACKPOT, with the Ferlands...our guide translated that we have a big train table with lots of Thomas trains at home). He also loves to play traffic light *what we call red light, green light) and he was quickly repeating (and correctly responding to stop and go...YEAH!) He also LOVES to sing and recite poems...he sang ALL afternoon. I SOOO wish we knew what he was saying! Although he did sing Twinkle Little Star in Chinese, so Cam and I sang along in English...he has a beautiful voice and sings in tune!!! But the BIG surprise was that he started reciting addition tables (i.e. 1+1=2 on up!) Apparently, he has had at least a year of preschool, which explains his ability to count to 10 in English...so smart!! We went to a restaurant last night that also serves American dishes...Cam was really jones-ing for a cheeseburger and Lucy's serves a good one! I ordered steamed rice and steamed vegetables...Cam looked at Enyi like he was an alien when Enyi started gobbling up broccoli, carrots, and cauliflower and only wanted a couple of his french fries...Ying and Yang???
FInally, after dinner last night, we were walking back through the park playing "1, 2, 3, SWING" and Red light, green light. As we came through the lobby of the hotel, he kept repeating something that I knew had to do with water...sounded alot like what I think he uses for potty...so I ran him up to the room to take him to the bathroom. He went, but kept repeating the words. When he left the bathroom, he ran over and picked up his swim suit...AH HA! Water=swimming...got it! BUT, the kid likes the water, but does not know how to swim...fearless like his brother. Shu Shu (uncle) Cole and Chris and Yai Yai Pop get your boats ready...with life jackets!
As for Campbell, he has been a real champ through all of this...very patient (most of the time) with his new brother. However, his skin is still very thin with the reactions of Enyi. He wants to pick up Enyi all the time and Enyi is used to being very independent. All in all, a very good day.
David (Kim's dad) goes back to the doctor today...he is healing up slowly. Please pray for a good report! More later from GZ!

  1. Love the new pictures. The boys are so cute together. Glad things are going so well. Hope the shots don't bother Enyi. We are thinking of your father Kim. Hope and pray all goes well for him. Love, Mom/Grandma
